2022 Tsinghua Technology Innovation - BMW China IT Innovation Joint Challenge Workshop & Meta Universe Idea Competition Preliminary Round Successfully Concluded

On August 14, 2022, the preliminary round of the 2022 Tsinghua Technology Innovation - BMW China IT Innovation Joint Challenge Workshop and Metaverse Idea Call Competition was successfully concluded.

There were more than ten team projects from Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management, School of Fine Arts, School of Information Technology, School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Architecture, School of Journalism and Communication, and other faculties and departments, as well as college students from universities at home and abroad participated in depth.

After two weeks of workshop boot camp, as well as the sharing and guidance of several guest mentors, the teams did their best to deepen and adjust their programs, take advantage of teamwork, and improve their knowledge and skills in leaps and bounds.

Finally, the best projects of 8 teams advanced to the finals in November.


Tsinghua University Technology Innovation and BMW China IT Innovation Joint Challenge Project Lab jointly launched the Meta-universe Idea Contest, which is co-sponsored by Tsinghua University Technology Innovation Research Center and BMW China IT and supported by Tsinghua University Art and Technology Innovation Base, aiming to select outstanding ideas and create meta-universe innovative business solutions for practical application scenarios around automotive products and services. The competition aims to select outstanding ideas and create innovative business solutions under the metaverse.

The creative proposals collected will be based on a virtual world parallel to the real world in the meta-universe, combining virtual reality hybrid experience, AI and cloud computing, avatars and digital twins, 5G blockchain and other technical directions to select the future brand officer, future executive officer and future experience officer who will be in charge of the future from the perspectives of brand marketing, production materials and in- and out-of-car experience.


A total of 10 guests were invited to serve as judges for the preliminary project defense evaluation. D. supervisor Tan Zhengyu, researcher Du Xia from Tsinghua Economic Management Dynamic Competition and Innovation Strategy Research Center, You Qi, head of BMW Innovation Management, Li Tiantian, post-doctoral researcher from the Department of Information Art and Design, Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, Huang Boyuan, master of transportation design from Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts and founder of Vision Car Technology (Beijing) Co. Ltd., the global champion of BMW 2040 concept car design competition in Germany, the founder and CEO of Lakoo, Gong Huachao, and Zhang Zichuan, an independent designer, the winner of the top ten outstanding cases of service design in China 2021, and the service experience consultant of many design and business consulting companies.


In their chosen tracks, the 10 reporting teams put forward innovative and feasible solutions for the self-selected themes and completed more perfect project designs around the practical application scenarios of the meta-universe concept in automotive products and services, which were eye-catching.


In the final critique session, the judges highly evaluated the projects of each team and also gave a lot of constructive comments. For each project, the judges asked questions about the creativity, completeness and technical involvement of the project, focusing on the advantages and applications of the future development of the project, and received detailed answers from the students.

You Qi, head of BMW Innovation Management, expressed his praise for the innovation points of each track project and said he hoped to see more concrete implementation solutions and business value points in the subsequent iterations of the project.

Professor Li Jizhen, Vice Dean of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management and Deputy Director of Tsinghua University Technology Innovation Research Center, said that for such a brand new concept as metaverse, the performance of the teams was very impressive and the reports were all particularly wonderful, fully demonstrating the extraordinary creative ability and rapid learning ability of the teams.


After 4 hours of project defense and evaluation, finally, the outstanding projects of 8 teams advanced to the final finals.

In the next one to two months, the organizers will invite BMW experts and Tsinghua tutors to provide 1v1 mentorship for the teams that have advanced to the next level, to help them optimize their projects, implement the technology, and improve the final results.


We hope that the students will turn their ideas into action, continue to iterate on their projects, and look forward to seeing the teams' stunning performances in the finals in two months' time.
